KMA's Top Kitchen Organizing Tips

Updated: May 28

Kitchens are a common area clients request organizing help with. It is the most frequently used room in the house, a high-traffic area, and an array of activities take place there. The kitchen is also generally a place where families come together for meals and conversation. It is important that this room is clear of unnecessary items and has systems in place to keep the space flowing.

KMA’s Top Tips

Be Intentional

Create clear zones in the kitchen and be deliberate about where you are storing items. Think about where you use an item and always store it as close to that location as possible.

Put the Essentials Front and Center

Think about the items you use most. Cabinets that are at eye level are what I call “prime real estate.” Store items you use frequently in these cabinets so that they are easily accessible.

Categorize Items

You may have similar items in multiple locations. For example, you may have cooking and serving utensils in a bin near the stove as well as in a drawer. Collect all the utensils regardless of where they are stored and categorize, sort and purge once they are all together. This way duplicate items can be easily identified.

Pare Down the Pantry

The pantry is an area that easily gets disorganized. Start by tossing all expired items. Categorize like items and store them together. Bins are very helpful in the pantry to keep like items together. Put hanging storage on the pantry door, shelf risers, or a revolving tray to increase storage space.

Use Labels

Labeling is critical in the kitchen, especially if you live with other people. Labeling helps everyone in the home know where to find items and where to put things back.

Infrequently Used Appliances and Serving Items

Items that you do not use as often do not need to be cluttering up space in your kitchen. Store these items more out of reach or in a different location in the house. Setting up shelving in the basement or garage is often a great way to get these items out of the kitchen

Create a Kid-Friendly Cabinet

If you have little ones, choose a lower cabinet to be their zone. Store all of their cups, plates, bowls, etc. there so that they can access them themselves. This helps them be more independent and also saves you energy. I also suggest putting some healthy snacks in this cabinet that they can access on their own.
